The University of Bordeaux is a great dynamic and responsible university that cares about the well-being of its staff. Joining us means working in a privileged environment within a particularly diverse and open professional community, benefiting from welcome and inclusion schemes, training and internal mobility. It means participating in an academic, scientific and human adventure. It means committing to meeting the challenges of the 21st century.
Join the Oceanic and Continental Environments and Palaeoenvironments (EPOC) – laboratory of the University of Bordeaux! This laboratory is a Joint Research Unit under the joint supervision of the University of Bordeaux, the CNRS, Bordeaux INP and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. EPOC is a multidisciplinary UMR developing a strong and recognized expertise in ecotoxicology, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, sedimentology, paleoclimatology, coastal oceanography, marine geosciences.
As part of the Human Past Major Research Program (GPR), we are recruiting a Research Engineer W/M to study the Hominin-Climate relationships in Eurasia during the Middle Pleistocene transition.
The project responds directly to the objectives of the GPR "Human Past" by targeting climate tipping points that could have an impact on human evolution. It helps to test the hypothesis of European depopulation suggested by genetic data and attributed to a pronounced aridity during the transition of the Middle Pleistocene.
Your mission will be integrated into Action 1 of Work Package 2, "How human societies interact with their environments?" which focuses on the study of past climate changes and their possible impact on hominin populations through pollen analysis of deep oceanic sedimentary sequences, their comparison with archaeological data and the application of ecological niche models.
The mission is to compare a high-resolution pollen record from a deep-sea sedimentary sequence of the Iberian margin covering the Middle Pleistocene Transition (~1.2–0.65 million years ago) with other paleoclimatic records and Eurasian archaeological and paleoanthropological data. Ecological niche modeling of hominins will be used to test hypotheses explaining European depopulation during this period. The study will be disseminated through high-impact scientific publications.
· Processing, and interpretation of pollen data
· Creation of a Eurasian paleoclimatic database for the Middle Pleistocene Transition (~1.2–0.65 million years ago)
· Use of archaeological and paleoanthropological databases
Application of ecological niche modeling
Holder of a PhD in paleoclimatology and palynology, with demonstrated experience in the processing of archaeological databases.
You have a profile specialized in the analysis of deep oceanic sedimentary sequences, with strong analytical expertise and an ability to integrate interdisciplinary issues at the interface of paleoclimatology and archaeology / paleoanthropology.
• You are autonomous, organized, and able to take initiative
• You demonstrate scientific rigor and methodology
• You are proficient in MATLAB and R for performing spectral and wavelet analyses.
• You are familiar with scientific data and database management tools and know how to use GARP and MaxEnt
