The university of Bordeaux is a great dynamic and responsible university that cares about the well-being of its staff. Joining us means working in a privileged environment within a particularly diverse and open professional community, benefiting from welcome and inclusion schemes, training and internal mobility. It means participating in an academic, scientific and human adventure. It means committing to meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Join the Institute of Mathematics of Bordeaux (IMB). The IMB is a joint research unit (UMR 5251) CNRS - University of Bordeaux - Bordeaux INP and brings together the latest research in mathematics from the Bordeaux site. It participates in the Cross-border Cooperation Laboratory TransMath with the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, the University of the Basque Country and Tecnalia. The IMB is also involved in the international research network France-South Korea (FKmathIRN).

As part of the project Thermodynamical and geometrical approach to multi dimensional aperiodic structures – THERMOGAMAS, funded by the National Research Agency, we are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher in mathematics W/M.

The objective of the project is to understand how an ordered system can emerge spontaneously from a disordered system.

Votre mission

We intend to understand fundamental questions about the emergence of order and aperiodic structures in multidimensional systems through the lens of thermodynamic formalism and ergodic theory.

Understanding how complex systems achieve order as temperature decreases represents a central challenge in mathematical physics and dynamical systems, with profound connections to materials science through the study of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings.

While one-dimensional models are relatively well understood through classical tools such as Ruelle operators and symbolic dynamics, multidimensional systems exhibit fundamentally richer phenomena including non-computable entropies, chaotic ground state selection, and aperiodic structures with long-range order emerging solely from local rules.

The objective of the postdoctoral felllowship is to interconnect many research directions:

-        Frenkel-Kontorova models and weak KAM theory in quasi-periodic environments

-        gradient Gibbs measures and statistical mechanics at zero temperature

-        multidimensional subshifts of finite type and computability theory

-        thermodynamics of Delone sets and geometric approaches to quasicrystals

-        substitution systems on infinite alphabets

-        ergodic optimization for non-uniformly hyperbolic systems

-        random dynamical systems.

You will participate in seminars, workshops conferences and collaborative research initiatives in partnership with the Instituto de Matemática Estatística e Ciência da Computação.

The postdoctoral fellowship is strategically linked to the ANR-FAPESP collaborative project THERMOGAMAS between France and Brazil that seeks to establish a strong scientific cooperation between leading international researchers in order to better understand how complexity and aperiodic order emerge at zero temperature in realistic physical and mathematical models.
