Objectifs et compétences

Objectifs :
This course will introduce the problematic of industrial needs in terms of device performances with respects to environment and standards. The example of lead based ferroelectric materials, finding application in domains such electronic, radars, etc. will be used to illustrate these critical challenges the development new materials, safer for the environment while being at least as performant as the lead based ones.

This course will first present a general description of what is a ferroelectric material, what types of properties it can exhibit and thus what types of applications can be targeted. In a second step, this course will focus on the industrial needs and explain why lead based ferroelectric materials usually present the best performances. Then, the notion of chemical toxicity and more precisely the lead one will be developed to justify the critical need of developing new materials. Finally, the notion of substitution materials will be explored through the example of BaTiO3 and its derivatives. This will be done in close link with the different field it can fulfill, together with the various synthesis strategies the limitations that can be encountered.

An illustration of the most well know BaTiO3 synthesis routes will be done, together with the product characterizations, through three practical sessions.

Main disciplinary competencies:

Fundamental knowledge: To be familiarized with the notion of environmental standards and the consequences regarding industrial needs.

From knowledge to know-how: To understand the specific problematic of lead based nanomaterials: why do they exhibit outstanding properties, what make their substitution so critical and what solutions can be proposed.

Practical: To experiment various synthesis routes for producing substitution materials and to me familiarized with the characterization techniques.
