Objectifs et compétences

Objectifs :
Goals:

• Provide students a knowledge on current sustainability challenges and the related triple bottom line of sustainable development

• Have students understand different criticality assessment methods and apply the EU list of critical raw materials

• Make sure students have a basic understanding of the value chain of raw materials plus recycling but covering in principle exploration, mining, processing, materials development, manufacturing, use and end of life options

• Ensure students the methods, software and databases to measure environmental impacts and the resource flows of raw materials and products by life cycle assessment and material flow analysis

• Have students grasp the opportunities of using the life cycle concepts for sustainable material and product development by a hands-on project

• Get students value the results of criticality and life cycle analysis studies for materials and processes selection in addition to mechanical properties and economic aspects

Main disciplinary competencies:

Fundamental knowledge: To be familiarized with the concepts of sustainability, criticality, resource-efficiency and the life cycle of materials and related assessment methods

From knowledge to know-how: To understand the specific problematic of measuring progress in the resource-efficiency of industrial systems that include materials recycling by using specific tools for the assessment of environmental impacts and the resource flows

Practical: To use software and databases to measure environmental impacts and the resource flows of raw materials and products by applying the methods of life cycle assessment and material flow analysis in hands-on project focusing on sustainable material and product development

I. Introduction to sustainability (1 meeting * 2h40)

II. Introduction to criticality and how to measure material flows (1 meeting * 2h40)

II.1- What are critical raw material and how to assess them?

II.2- The EU list of critical raw materials

II.3- Material Flow Analysis

III. The life cycle of materials and environmental impacts (1 meeting * 2h40)

III.1- Exploration and extraction of raw materials

III.2- Production and consumption, including end-of-life strategies

III.3- Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

IV. Life Cycle Assessment 1 (before TD and TP) (1 meeting * 2h40)

I.1- Life Cycle Assessment: Theory and applications

I.2- Life Cycle Management and company case studies

I.3- Eco-design and environmental product declarations

V. Life Cycle Assessment 2 (after TD and TP) (1meeting * 2h40)

II.1- Goal and Scope Definition and Life Cycle Inventory
