Quèsaco the TechnoShop? Almost as its name suggests, it is a platform whose objective is to provide research laboratories as well as regional SMEs/SMIs and start-ups with technological support in their innovation projects. As Matthieu Faessel explains so well, "We are solution finders. People come to see us when they need to find a 5-legged sheep, in other words, come up with the idea that the others haven't!" Created in 2015 at the same time as the Fablab, the technological resource centre needed a director.

"I had plans to move back to the region and Frédéric Bos*, the director of the University Institute of Technology (IUT) offered to let me take care of setting up the TechnoShop - what a great opportunity!" he told us. Although he's not originally from Bordeaux, Matthieu Faessel completed his Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) and thesis in engineering sciences (wood science) at the University of Bordeaux (University Bordeaux I, back then). Then came a few years in Paris working in a laboratory at the prestigious École des Mines before this welcome return to Bordeaux just as he was turning 40.

Inventing every day

The TechnoShop is truly a bridge between industry and research, functioning on the model of a company and employing 10 engineers and technicians specialised in robotics, IT, mechanical, electronic or mechatronics engineering… Cross-disciplinary skills at the service of industrialists seeking innovation.

"We are technical doctors," jokes Matthieu Faessel, "we provide services to companies and laboratories since we understand their needs and we look for unique, innovative solutions for each one; we never rest on our laurels!" As director, Matthieu Faessel keeps the shop running in a flexible, responsive way. Sometimes a sales rep looking for partners, sometimes an engineer or technician, he participates in project development and implementation. "My goal is to be useful, to help businesses in the region to find innovative, economical solutions in a spirit of public service," he explained. What else does he like about his job? "Inventing every day, that's my creative side…. I'm an artist on the inside. I wanted to play the saxophone and I ended up doing fundamental physics…"

My goal is to be useful, to help businesses in the region to find innovative, economical solutions in a spirit of public service."

What does the University of Bordeaux mean to you?

"A pool of skills and knowledge in many areas.

A vibrant community where I feel I belong, thanks to the link between the world of industry and research that the University represents, especially through the exchanges between the different departments, training components and external partners."
