Open Badges

Updated on:

Since the start of the 2020 academic year, the University of Bordeaux has been experimenting with digital badges. Why? To acknowledge skills acquired by students, beyond their academic studies, in relation to their personal skills, achievements or involvement.

What is an Open Badge?

An Open Badge is a reliable, simple and fun way to highlight your cross-disciplinary skills.

From a technical point of view, an Open Badge is a digital image where a certain amount of information, or metadata, is recorded, including:

  • The identity of the receiver, i.e. the student who has earned the badge.
  • The identity of the issuer who awards the badge and attests to the skills developed.
  • The criteria for awarding the badge and the proof submitted to acquire it.

A free, digital & secure system

Open Badges are personal and aimed at allowing students to express their identity and individuality. They acknowledge and certify a student's skills as well as highlight the cross-disciplinary initiatives set up by the university.

Eight badges are available to students who can earn one or several of them, based on their experience and achievements.

The badges earned are then stored in a badge bag that can be viewed online. The digital platform lets students post and share their badges on various professional social media and employment websites or even include them directly in their CVs.

The Open Badge is a totally secure, proof-based system, with the metadata stored in each badge attesting to the goals reached, the skills developed and its official status.
