Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions

Updated on:

Every three years, the University of Bordeaux produces and publishes a Bilan Carbone® (Carbon Report) detailing its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, in order to obtain an accurate picture of its impact and prioritise a tailored transition plan.

The main sources of emissions are travel, inputs (non-depreciable purchases) and energy. The University of Bordeaux has set itself the target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 22% by the time the period covered by this master plan ends in 2027.

Publication of the 2022 carbon report allowed the university not only to quantify its GHG emissions by item, but also to draw up a transition plan tailored to its activities, featuring short-term, medium-term and long-term objectives.

In 2022, all of the University of Bordeaux’s activities combined emitted 62,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq), which on an individual scale is around 5.34 tCO2eq for a member of staff, compared to 0.58 tCO2eq for a student.

  • Decarbonised mobility

The University of Bordeaux’s objective is to work to improve two types of travel: everyday travel (between one’s home and place of work/study) and business travel (local, national and international).

  • Energy use trajectory

Against the backdrop of the climate emergency and an energy crisis that is resulting in rising costs, the University of Bordeaux is fully committed to reducing its energy consumption.
