Environmental and social change

Updated on:

The University of Bordeaux is taking transformative action to tackle the environmental, social, economic and political challenges of our time.

  • Transition policy

As a public institution for research, education and innovation, the University of Bordeaux has all the means it needs to support environmental and social change on its campuses and with its partners. To do this, it relies on a dynamic community.

  • Teaching about transitions

Educating students in environmental and social change is a key concern for the University of Bordeaux. It is committed to providing them with the theoretical and practical training they need to perform their role as citizens and future professionals.

  • Supporting research and innovation that promotes change

The University of Bordeaux has a particular responsibility with respect to the contemporary environmental and social challenges that we face: to promote responsible research that demonstrates awareness of environmental issues and ensures respect for those who produce this research, that helps to bring about change, provides an understanding of current and future social transformations, and guides these transformations.

  • Strengthening our inclusion policy

Nurtured by humanist values, with a policy that focuses well-being and quality of life, the University of Bordeaux works to ensure equal treatment and respect for diversity within its community.

  • Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions

Every three years, the University of Bordeaux produces and publishes a Bilan Carbone® (Carbon Report) detailing its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, in order to obtain an accurate picture of its impact and prioritise a tailored transition plan.

  • Preserving resources

The environmental challenges facing an institution such as the University of Bordeaux are not limited to greenhouse gas emissions. The preservation of natural resources such as water and the overall ‘life cycle’ approach to the products consumed at the university are therefore key pillars of our institutional strategy.

  • Protecting biodiversity

Boasting 140 hectares of green spaces, the University of Bordeaux has created a detailed biodiversity roadmap to preserve these spaces and fully integrate them into its real estate strategy.

  • Rencontres des transitions

Launched in 2022, the Rencontres des Transitions is an annual event that brings together various local networks and stakeholders to discuss the challenges of environmental and social change and design partnership projects that address the concerns of institutions, businesses and citizens.
