The department coordinates research in public health, a field in which the University of Bordeaux is a major player. Its research covers epidemiology, biostatistics, health computing, disability and health economics.
The Public health department, created in 2019, now brings together 10 Inserm U1219-certified Bordeaux Population Health university research teams (including one Inria and one IRD team) and 3 modules from the Bordeaux Clinical Investigation Centre (CIC 14-01).
The department, undergoing substantial growth, currently unites a community of nearly 600 people. The research conducted contributes to gaining knowledge on population health. It also helps to develop methodological and technological innovations that improve the capacity to understand and model health and its determining factors. The research covers the fields of epidemiology, biostatistics, health computing, disability and health economics.
The areas of expertise in public health are: mental health in children and adolescents, cancer and the study of environmental effects on health, ageing and, in particular, cerebral ageing, cerebrovascular ageing and their genetic determining factors, infectious diseases and epidemiology in limited-resource countries, pharmaco-epidemiology and drug safety, and the methodological developments for processing big data, interventional research in populations and translational research in public health.
The Public health research environment includes:
In addition, the department collaborates with the Environmental and Occupational Health Department of Public Health France on joint projects.
Researchers from the Public health department make a major contribution to the courses taught at the Bordeaux School of Public Health (ISPED), which trains more than 1,000 students and professionals in public health every year.
They also contribute to courses in the Graduate Research Programme for Digital Public Health, the Medical sciences teaching and research unit, the University Institute of Rehabilitation, and the Mathematics and interactions training unit.
