Born in 1964 in Strasbourg, Bernard Muller holds a doctor of pharmacy degree, an Advanced Studies diploma (DEA) and a Doctorate in pharmacology. During his Doctorate, he worked as an introductory instructor in higher education, which triggered his passion for a career in teaching and research. He then became a temporary teaching and research fellow (ATER), followed by a lecturer in pharmacology at the Louis Pasteur University's Faculty of Pharmacy in Strasbourg. In 2001, his post-doctoral work in vascular pathophysiology and pharmacology led to his accreditation as a research supervisor.

After starting his academic career in Strasbourg, Bernard Muller was recruited in 2002 as a professor of pharmacology at the Pharmaceutical Sciences Teaching and Research Unit at Bordeaux Segalen University and joined an Inserm unit (now the Bordeaux Cardiothoracic Research Centre > in French). His research work focused on the mechanisms responsible for alterations in pulmonary circulation in two pathophysiological contexts: pulmonary hypertension and exposure to fine particles, particularly those from atmospheric pollution.

He teaches on healthcare courses ranging from the PASS/LAS (Specific Healthcare Access Pathway / Healthcare Access Bachelor’s Degree) through to the fourth year of the Pharmacy degree, as well as on DEUST, Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. He has helped to develop various courses (Bachelor’s in Health Technologies, and the DEUST in Scientific and Technical Studies for Pharmacy Assistants/Technicians).

As director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Teaching & Research Unit (in French), Bernard Muller has been involved in university life. He has also been active at national level within the Conference of Deans of Pharmacy Faculties, serving as its chair from 2017 to 2021 during a period of significant reforms affecting health studies and issues relating to student wellbeing. He was appointed by the French ministry as co-officer in charge of finalising the reform of postgraduate pharmaceutical studies, and chaired the CNU section on Maieutics from its inception until 2021.

Bernard Muller was appointed Vice-President for student and campus life on February 2022 by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux, which reappoints him to this post for the 2026–2030 term.

Student life and campus life are key drivers of success, inclusion, citizenship and appeal. Let’s build on this momentum to make our university an increasingly welcoming and inclusive place that promotes health, is committed to driving change and is open to society, all in the service of an enriched student experience.
