Véronique Bertile, Senior Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Bordeaux’s Faculty of Law and Political Science, was appointed Vice-President by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux, in February 2026.

A native of Réunion and the daughter of teachers, Véronique Bertile studied law at the University of Aix-Marseille. As she speaks Réunion Creole as her mother tongue in addition to French, whilst undertaking her studies she quickly developed an interest in the issue of regional and minority languages in the Constitution. Her doctoral thesis in public law, which she defended at the University of Montesquieu Bordeaux IV in 2005 under the supervision of Ferdinand Mélin-Soucramanien, a renowned constitutionalist who was appointed Ethics Officer of the National Assembly in 2014, focused on this highly specific subject.

She was appointed Senior Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Bordeaux in 2007. Having a natural interest in the laws of France’s overseas territories, Véronique Bertile also specialises in this field.

In 2014, she was appointed adviser to Georges Pau-Langevin, François Hollande’s Minister for Overseas. In 2015, she was seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as ambassador for the Antilles-Guyana region.

Véronique Bertile returned to the University of Bordeaux in 2017.

She is a member of the Centre for Comparative Studies and Research on Constitutions, Freedoms and the State (CERCCLE - University of Bordeaux), where she conducts research into public law. Her expertise lies primarily in regional languages and France’s overseas territories, two areas of research which, whilst they may intersect in her work, nevertheless remain distinct. She thus studies the marginalisation of regional linguistic practices in general, focusing on their legal status with respect to France’s overseas territories. In 2018, she also co-founded the Association of Lawyers Specialising in Overseas Law (AJDOM), of which she is the Secretary General.

Véronique Bertile also holds substantial teaching and administrative responsibilities, having been Director of Studies for the Bachelor’s in Law (2019–2020), Vice-Dean for the Bachelor’s (2020–2021) and Interim Faculty Administrator (2021–2022). Committed to ensuring student success, she was responsible for launching the ‘Droit devant’ Start U project, a summer school supporting first-year students, which won the 2022 Talents U Awards. In 2025, she became co-head of the University of Bordeaux’s Prépa’Talents civil service programme.

In February 2026, she was appointed Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux.

The university must offer a welcoming and protective environment for all, particularly those in vulnerable situations. It’s our responsibility to ensure equality in the workplace and combat all forms of discrimination, racism, anti-Semitism, and gender-based and sexual violence.
