The University of Bordeaux has recently published its 2024-2025 report on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This strategic document provides an overview of the initiatives undertaken on campus to address major environmental and societal challenges. Research, education, student life, partnerships... the entire university community is mobilised to accelerate the transition.
Since 2019, the University of Bordeaux has placed sustainability at the heart of its institutional project. This focus was first reflected in the implementation of the Horizon 2030 strategic plan, followed by an Environmental and Societal Roadmap that commits the university to 24 concrete objectives in all its areas of activity. In 2024, this dynamic reached a decisive milestone with the publication of a Transitions Master Plan for the 2024-2027 period, a true compass for the years to come.
This strong commitment is now recognised nationally and internationally. Since 2021, the university has been awarded the "Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility" label (DDRS label) and has risen to first place among French universities in the Times Higher Education Impact 2025 ranking, which assesses the contribution of institutions to the 17 SDGs defined by the UN. This performance highlights Bordeaux's leading role in the transformation of higher education.

Behind these strategies are very concrete achievements that punctuate university life. On a social level, the university actively combats student poverty through a network of solidarity initiatives: social grocery stores on campus, distribution of discounted food baskets, digital partnership with Emmaüs Connect, and more.
The issue of food is also being addressed in an innovative way. The Sustainable Food Living Lab, inaugurated in 2024, brings together researchers, students, university restaurants (Crous) and associations with a common goal: to make catering more local, more plant-based and more sustainable. Culinary experiments, workshops, research projects and actions against food insecurity are being carried out there.
Health and wellbeing are another key pillar. Interdisciplinary research programmes such as HOPE explore the determinants of individual and collective wellbeing, while the university is increasing its prevention measures, health surveys among students and mental health first aid training. Festivals, debates and student initiatives help to encourage open discussion and raise awareness of issues as varied as mental health, sexuality and physical activity.
In terms of training, the 2024–2025 academic year saw the launch of a cross-disciplinary teaching unit dedicated to ecological and societal transitions, attended by several thousand students. This educational innovation aims to equip every future graduate with the knowledge they need to understand and respond to the major upheavals of the contemporary world.
The university also stands out in terms of gender equality, with an ambitious institutional plan, enhanced reporting mechanisms, awareness programmes and strong mobilisation of the scientific community. In the field of water and energy management, laboratories and Living Labs are developing concrete solutions to reduce consumption and experiment with new sustainable practices on campus.
Behind each of these actions are lecturers, researchers, administrative staff, students and external partners drawing on various initiatives, notably the ACT programme. The SDG report highlights this collective intelligence, which is the strength of the University of Bordeaux: a mobilised, creative community determined to make campuses exemplary areas of transition.
With more than 52,000 students, 6,100 staff members, 18 campuses, internationally recognised research and hundreds of ongoing projects, the university has major assets to further amplify its impact. It invites anyone who wishes to contribute to the next edition of the report to continue enriching this shared dynamic.
