The Bordeaux University Innovation Hub (PUI - Pôle universitaire d’innovation), led by the University of Bordeaux, strives to speed up the region’s innovation momentum by unlocking the potential of public research players. As a partnership hub, it strives, through supporting researchers and their projects, to create fertile ground for innovations, which it understands as the transformation of the results of research into a solution which has a positive impact on human societies and natural ecosystems.
As part of the research programming law and the France 2030 plan, the University Innovation Hub led by the University of Bordeaux brings together 14 academic institutions and 2 subsidiaries associated with 34 partners in the region. Building on this diversity of stakeholders and a long shared history, it will lead to the development of partnership-based research with businesses and the creation of start-ups (so-called “deep tech”) driving disruptive innovation.
The project is organised around three strategic areas:
This programme supports an action plan covering the first 4 years.
As part of the University Innovation Hub, the University of Bordeaux has partnered with 15 co-founders: Bordeaux Polytechnic Institute (Bordeaux INP - Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux), the National School of Agricultural Sciences (BSA - École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques), Bordeaux University Hospital (CHU - Centre hospitalier universitaire de Bordeaux), the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), the Arts and Crafts School (ENSAM - École Arts et Métiers), the Bordeaux National School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ENSAP - École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture & de Paysage de Bordeaux), the School of Advanced Industrial Technologies (ESTIA - École Supérieure des Technologies Industrielles Avancées), the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE -Institut national de recherche pour l’agriculture, l’alimentation et l’environnement), the National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (INRIA - Institut national de Recherche en Sciences et Technologies du Numérique), the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm - Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale), the Optics Institute Graduate School (IOGS - Institut d’Optique Graduate School), Bordeaux Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po Bordeaux), Bordeaux Montaigne University, the Association for the Development of Education and Research in Aquitaine (ADERA) and the technology transfer acceleration company (SATT - Société d'accélération du transfert de technologies) Aquitaine Science Transfer (AST - Aquitaine Science Transfert).
The Bordeaux University Innovation Hub is a project funded by the state as part of France 2030.
The 34 partners associated with the PUI are the other stakeholders in the innovation value chain: competitiveness hubs, clusters, technology resource centres, industrial technical centres, economic development agencies, etc. Also included are: the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA - Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives), the French National Office for Aerospace Studies and Research (ONERA - Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales), the Bordeaux University Foundation, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, and Bordeaux Municipality.
Beyond the values of public higher education and research that they share, the founders can adopt a broad and inclusive definition of innovation, capable of reflecting the diversity of the issues faced by the founders and partners, while creating consistency in the service of collective ambitions:
“Innovation is the implementation of new or improved ideas to generate economic or societal value and meet specific needs. It combines expertise from all areas of research to offer integrated and relevant solutions. It can take the form of products, services, processes, economic or organisational models that differ from existing ones and provide an economic, social, environmental, or technological advantage. This approach encompasses technical, human, cultural, and societal dimensions.
Innovation is distinguished by its applied and impactful nature, going beyond simple invention or discovery. By combining creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration and tangible impact, it promotes sustainable transformation for the benefit of society.”
This collective project is part of a coherent overall vision designed for the entire university ecosystem. It will act as a catalyst, complementing our other major institutional transformation programmes dedicated to experimentation and innovation for the common good in the region, in particular the InnovationS programme and the ACT - Augmented University for Campus and World Transition (Université augmentée pour la transition des campus et du monde) - programme.
With its strong regional roots and broad international outlook, the University of Bordeaux plays a leading role in coordinating and accelerating the ongoing development of its ecosystem for promoting research and innovation. This ecosystem is highly multidisciplinary, internationally renowned, and large in scale, with a proven track record of innovation, as evidenced by the university's strong performance in the rankings of the French National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI - Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle), Reuters, and Times Higher Education.
