Signing of a partnership agreement between the University of Bordeaux and the Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry

Updated on:

A framework agreement for international cooperation was signed by the President of the University of Bordeaux and the Rector of the Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry (UGANC) of Guinea in March 2023. This framework agreement will allow the reinforcement of exchanges between the Bordeaux School of Public Health (ISPED) and UGANC, in terms of teaching, training and research.

The collaboration between the University of Bordeaux and the Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry was born from the PREVAC-UP clinical research project, which is structured around the PREVAC (Partnership for Research on Ebola Vaccinations) consortium.

Its main objective is to evaluate the long-term safety and durability of the immune responses to three different Ebola vaccine strategies, tested by the consortium for 5 years in four African countries: Guinea, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone.

The project, led by Dr. Edouard Lhomme (ISPED, University of Bordeaux) and Prof. Abdoulaye Touré (CERFIG Director, Guinea), includes several actions aimed at strengthening the clinical research capacities of the countries in the consortium, in particular by:

  • developing the hosting and training capacities in research and biological, clinical and population health practices of the African institutions involved,
  • improving networks and exchange programmes in the African sub-region (South-South) and between African and European institutions (South-North).

The framework agreement signed between the University of Bordeaux and UGANC is a first step towards developing partnerships in teaching, research and professional training between the two universities.

ISPED, UGANC and CERFIG wish to:

  • develop the support of the Master of Public Health already existing at UGANC,
  • create an inter-university diploma (DIU) in clinical research adapted to the African context. The creation of this joint degree between ISPED and UGANC is currently under discussion and could come into being in 2024. The objective of this diploma is to train students in the basics of clinical research reasoning and in the key stages of building and carrying out a clinical research project, based on concrete examples of research carried out in Africa, while at the same time raising awareness of specific ethical, regulatory and anthropological principles.
