Teaching about transitions

Educating students in environmental and social change is a key concern for the University of Bordeaux. It is committed to providing them with the theoretical and practical training they need to perform their role as citizens and future professionals.

In addition to a basic course of study, the university also wants to offer every student who wishes to do so the opportunity to specialise in a transition-related field.

Current objectives and initiatives

Rolling out a study module focusing on transitions

  • Compulsory for undergraduate students
  • Designed in two parts: the first cross-disciplinary, the second directly linked to the student’s subject area (30 hours of study/each worth 3 ECTS credits) 
  • Timetable: January 2025 for the Colleges of Health and ST and certain faculties of the College of Human Sciences; start of the 2025 academic year for the entire College of Human Sciences, College of Law, Political Science, Economics and Management and the IUT
  • Roll-out of basic modules by 2025-2026 at the latest 
  • 100% of undergraduates will have taken these modules by 2027

Integrating transitions into all degree programmes

  • 9 teaching research staff members assigned to each college and educational institute
  • All degrees programmes integrating transitions in 2027 in preparation for the new accreditation

Supporting and training teaching teams

  • 20% of tenured teaching research staff trained to teach about transitions by 2027
  • Provision of online tools and roll-out of workshops

Developing personalised courses of study 

  • At least 1 course of study dedicated to a transition-related issue in half of all master’s degrees and BUT specialisations in 2027
  • Support for integration into transition-related professi

What I can do as a teaching staff member

  • Participate in the development and/or teaching team of the “Taking Action in a Changing World” module within my member school, faculty or institute 
  • Help to teach the basic modules 
  • Educate myself, via the staff training plan 
  • Apply to take leave for a transitions-related educational project
  • Support a training project linked to the challenges associated with transitions, in particular STEP
