Karim Belabas: Vice-President for digital technology

Karim Belabas, professor of mathematics, was appointed Vice-President for digital technology at the University of Bordeaux in February 2022 by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux.

Born in 1971 in Talence, Karim Belabas entered the École Normale Supérieure (Paris) in 1990. After a Magistère degree in mathematics and computer science, during which he obtained the agrégation in mathematics, he joined University Bordeaux I in the Algorithmique Arithmétique et eXpérimentale (A2X > in French) laboratory to prepare a PhD in number theory. He became responsible for and the main developer of the PARI/GP formal calculation system, the vector of research in algorithms carried out in the laboratory, and defended his thesis in 1996.
After a post-doc at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany, he was recruited in 1998 as a lecturer at the Mathematics Laboratory of Orsay. In 2005, Karim Belabas was appointed professor at the A2X laboratory in Bordeaux, which was later merged into the Bordeaux Mathematics Institute (in French). He also created the INRIA LFANT project team in 2010.
Karim Belabas has been a member of the scientific board of the French Mathematical Society (in French) since 2017.

Active in academic life, he has successively been director of the pure mathematics department of the Maths-Info teaching and research unit, deputy director of the Bordeaux Mathematics Institute (two terms, in charge of IT resources), member of the National Board of Universities, deputy director of the Mathematics & Interactions teaching unit (UFMI > in French).

He served two terms on the research commission of the University of Bordeaux's academic senate; during his second term, he chaired the disciplinary section relevant to lecturer-researchers and teachers.

Karim Belabas was appointed Vice-President for digital technology in February 2022 by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux.

Digital technology is everywhere, a source of financial savings, scientific and social progress as well as a source of waste and new risks.
My task is to organise and intensify the university's reasoned digital transformation, in line with its strategic plans.
