A native of the Gironde metropolis, Philippe Moretto studied at university in the area until his thesis in 1987 and his position as lecturer a year later. He then joined the Centre of Nuclear Studies - Bordeaux-Gradignan (CENBG), now the Physics of the Two Infinities Laboratory (LP2I).

Throughout his career, Philippe Moretto has been in charge of various university facilities and training components, both in the field of training and research.
Appointed university professor in 1997, he has been very active in teaching. He was in charge of the Master degree in physics from 2003 to 2011, and created a professional training course in nuclear instrumentation in 2009, which is now an integral part of the training programmes offered by the University of Bordeaux. He served as interim headteacher of the Science and Technology School from January to June 2022.

In the field of research, he established an interdisciplinary research team focusing on the ‘physics-biology interface’ – now known as ‘Interaction of Ionising Radiation and Biology’ – at LP2I, as well as the AIFIRA platform in 2006. He also served as director of the umbrella organisation bringing together all the physics departments at the University of Bordeaux 1 (Institute of Fundamental Physics – IPF) from 2008 to 2011, and subsequently as director of the MI2B Research Group (Instrumentation and Modelling for Biomedical Imaging) from 2015 to 2017. Philippe Moretto directed the CENBG from 2011 to 2017.

He took up the position of Vice-President for research at the University of Bordeaux in February 2018, and he was appointed Science and society mission officer in February 2022.

He was appointed Vice-President for transitions and societal dialogue in April 2024 by Dean Lewis, President of the University of Bordeaux, who reappointed him as Vice-President for Transitions in February 2026.

In the current climate, where our society faces major environmental and societal challenges, the University of Bordeaux has a duty to lead by example in the area of transition. The actions we are undertaking, notably through the resources of the ACT programme, aim to gradually transform the institution by supporting initiatives within our communities, mobilising collective intelligence to co-develop concrete solutions with stakeholders, and offering researchers and research-led academics new ways of approaching research on these issues in a systemic, even holistic, manner.
