Objectifs et compétences
South African biologist and Nobel Prize winner Sydney Brenner once said “progress in science depends on new techniques, new discoveries, and new ideas—probably in that order”. The mammalian brain is a case in point. It is an incredibly complex organ, and major new insights into its function have typically followed on the heels of novel scientific instruments and new methods (Svoboda, Cerebrum 2016). In this course we will see how in the last decade different techniques in imaging increased our knowledge in neuroscience, study at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution processes such as synaptic transmission, receptor trafficking, or morphological adaptations during brain plasticity.
After revision of few basic principles, we will study different type of fluorescence microscopy, including two photon, super resolution (PALM, STED, STORM), miniature microscopes for deep tissue imaging. We will see how light is used not only to visualize cells, but also to record and manipulate neuronal activity, and get information from the single protein to circuit level. Furthermore an overview of electron microscopy techniques will be provided.
Lecture (24h) will be given by researcher in the field including: Elena Avignone, Ingrid Chamma, Matthieu Ducros, Julien Dupuis, Remi Galland, Frederic Gambino, Marc Landry, Valentin Nagerl, Olivier Thoumine. Furthermore students will attend one or two lectures of the Cajal school ‘Advanced Imaging Methods for Cellular Neuroscience’.
Besides participating to lectures, students will do assisted class work (24h) with exercise analyzing papers figures, solving problems, design experiments to consolidate their knowledge in the imaging field and to understand advantages and limitations of different technics. Pedagogic approach includes flipped class and evaluation by pair. Part of the course includes small lectures given by students.
During the semester student will do some practical (8h) in a lab with a researcher to study an imaging technique including: PALM, STORM, single particle tracking, in-vivo two photon calcium imaging, light sheet microscopy.
The evaluation is based on class work, student presentations, lab practical report (continuum assessment) and a final exam.Compétences :
- Design experimental protocols
- Work in a transversal, multidisciplinary way and participate in team effort in an international environment
- Have in-depth knowledge of at least one specialized Neurosciences field
- Develop and apply appropriate research methodologies (including proteomics, genomics, brain imaging, modelling…) and modern research tools (including software) for investigating brain research issues.
- Examine their own practice in a critical manner and modify accordingly, including reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of brain research

- Neurosciences display a very extensive range of interests, from the molecular level to cognition and even further (societal Neuroscience…). Additional specific learning outcomes in a related field can thus spread from mathematics or physics to psychology or sciences of education and cannot be detailed here
